The City of Saint Paul Public Works Street Maintenance Division is hiring individuals to perform manual labor in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, highways, alleys, sidewalks, and City right-of-way.

Candidates with a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) have a starting wage of $30.74 - $33.13 per hour. Candidates with a Class D Driver's License or equivalent and relevant work experience will have a starting wage of $26.12 per hour. Here’s what you can expect to do: Work outdoors in all types of weather; nights, weekends, holidays, and reasonable overtime as required. Perform snow removal, trash removal from the public right-of-way. Operate and maintain equipment. Sweep and clean streets and performs traffic control in the right-of-way for maintenance operations. Operate trucks, gasoline powered, and electric tools. For more information and essential functions, see our job description. Information Specific to this Position: Street Maintenance is a 24-hour, 365-day operation. Most of the staff is split between the day shift and the night shift, Monday through Friday. The day shift works from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The night shift begins on Sunday night and works from 10:30 PM to 7:00 AM.

In addition, there is one staff person that works the afternoon shift throughout the week. Weekend day and night shifts consist of two staff persons during non-winter months and multiple staff and a supervisor during the winter months. Shift preference is based on seniority.

Qualifications

Requirements may be met by one of the following:

Possess and maintain a Class B or Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL), including a tank vehicle endorsement, with no restrictions for airbrakes.

OR

Possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class D or equivalent out of state Driver’s License AND

Related paid work experience OR

Currently enrolled in a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training program

Additional Information:

Licenses must have no suspensions or revocations for driving-related offenses during the two year period prior to the date of appointment. Suspensions for parking-related offenses are excluded.

Employment in this job classification shall not exceed 2080 regular work hours without obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License. Failure to obtain a Class B or Class A CDL will result in termination of employment. Extensions due to extenuating circumstances may be considered.

Candidates with a Class D driver’s license will be assigned to the non-CDL step of the salary schedule. The first pay period after obtaining a Commercial Driver’s license, employees will advance to the CDL Holder Start Step of the salary schedule.

Must pass a DOT required pre-employment drug screen and submit to DOT mandated random drug and alcohol testing after hire.
