Responsibilities

Teleworking employees are required to live in Minnesota or in a state bordering Minnesota. The candidates hired and new to this job classification may be eligible to receive a $5,000 hiring bonus! This bonus will be paid in two increments, with the first payment made after successfully passing the probationary period.

A $1,000 Referral Bonus may be offered to Revenue staff that recruit new talent hired at Revenue, in this position. A referral form will be sent to new hires who are in positions eligible for the referral incentives.

The purpose of this position is to advance the Department of Revenue's mission to achieve compliance with Minnesota Tax Laws. Specialists in this position will provide service to internal and external customers necessary to determine proper compliance with all provisions of the Lawful Gambling and Unrelated Business Income (UBI) Tax types. In addition, this position performs all aspects of the compliance cycle including customer service, education, tax policy, audit, and progressive enforcement.

Most of the time will be spent auditing licensed lawful gambling organizations that conduct charitable gambling such as bingo, pull-tabs, raffles, tip boards and paddlewheel. Audits will also be conducted on tax-exempt organizations that have Unrelated Business Income. Audits are conducted both onsite and virtually. Audits may be done individually or in teams. Auditors may be expected to travel locally and within the state several times a month with overnight travel required 2-3 times per year. Auditors will also be responsible for answering phone calls, e-mails, and participating in various internal projects and external outreach projects providing taxpayer education. This position will be a hybrid working environment which will require time in the office, in the field, and in the home. This position offers a wide variety of duties in daily work.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications Must have reliable transportation or a valid class D driver's license

One (1) year of full-time professional experience in accounting or auditing OR Three (3) years of experience providing administrative support duties working with taxes or conducting research and analysis work *Doctorate degree may substitute for two years of experience; Master’s degree may substitute for 18 months of experience; Bachelor’s degree may substitute for one year of experience; Associate’s degree may substitute for six months of experience

Applicants who meet the above requirements will be further evaluated through the interview process on the following: • Knowledge of personal computers, including knowledge of word-processing, spreadsheet, and database applications/software. • Human relations, communication skills necessary to deal with taxpayers and workplace associates in a professional and effective manner. • Problem-solving skills and organizational/planning skills necessary to independently perform the duties of the position.¿

Preferred Qualifications • Bachelor's in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business & Administration, Business Management or Marketing or related degree as determined by the agency. • Master's in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, Business Administration, or related degree as determined by the agency, or CPA. • Experience with Lawful Gambling or Unrelated Business Income tax laws, rules, and procedures. • Proficiency using Microsoft Excel, including using formulas and pivot tables, sorting data, formatting spreadsheets and cells, and linking data between worksheets. • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects at a time. • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. • Experience using the Department of Revenue's Gentax system.

Physical Requirements Requires occasional moving of articles such as boxes, accounting records, laptop computer, and portable printer that weigh up to 20 pounds.
